Whale watching in Tromsø: orcas & humpbacks in the polar winter

Both species hunt the herring shoals in the fjords around Skjervøy in winter: orcas (killer whales) and humpback whales. Few places in the world have both together in the polar winter, which is why this region became a whale watching destination at all.

Skjervøy lies about 160 km from Tromsø by road, and in recent winters the herring, and with them the whales, have wintered in the fjords around it. Two travel formats get you there: the catamarans and the heated ship sail the whole way from Tromsø (8–9 hours on the water), while the RIB tours put you on an early bus (departing Tromsø around 05:00–05:20) and launch the boat right at the grounds in Skjervøy.

Catamarans are warmer and calmer, with indoor panorama lounges and the lowest prices in this comparison. It depends on the day and the boat. In rough seas, up to a third of passengers can feel seasick, mostly on the open-sea legs. Larger catamarans ride more smoothly than small RIBs. If you are prone to motion sickness, pick a catamaran and take seasickness medication before departure; the Polar Adventures ship lists people prone to seasickness as not suitable.

This is the polar winter above the Arctic Circle. On deck it is cold, and on an open RIB the wind chill is serious. RIB operators typically provide thermal suits; on catamarans and ships you can warm up in heated indoor lounges at any time. Dress in warm layers regardless of boat type.

Sometimes. The whale season falls in the darkest months, and on clear afternoons the aurora can appear while you are on the water. Treat it as a possible bonus, not a plan. If the aurora is your priority, a dedicated northern lights tour is the better bet.
